November Garden Jobs

Welcome everyone to my little November jobs list.

Although things start to slow down a bit in the garden in November there are a few jobs I'll be doing:

Planting garlic

Although I usually try and plant my garlic in October this year I am slightly behind so I'll be planting it in November.

I'll prep the ground by adding some Dalefoot Lakeland Gold and some well-rotted manure. I'll then plant two varieties, a hardneck and softneck, with the following spacing:

  • 15cm between cloves

  • 30cm between rows

  • 3cm - 7cm depth (if you have heavy soil plant shallow and mulch up)

You can also grow garlic in pots. Using a pot that's 20cm, sow 6 gloves.

Planting tulips

Although the young people planted some tulips at my 'Autumn in the Garden' event I will be planting tulips in the ground in November. Planting tulips later in the season is a traditional means of disease protection. The cold temperatures help to wipe out viral and fungal disease that can reside in the soil. These will be going into some of the borders and near my pond.

Planting raspberry canes

I currently have autumn raspberry canes in the garden but as my daughter (who is 2) is a huge soft fruit fan I've decided to plant some canes for summer harvesting.

November is the start of the dormant season (it runs until March) so it's an ideal time to plant some canes.

I'll be adding lots of well-rotted manure in the ground and planting these in one of my borders amongst my herbs. Follow me on tik tok (@younggrowersclub) to watch how and where I'll plant them.

Preparing the garden for winter

This is my absolute favourite time in the garden. Taking care of the ground is a chance to really focus on the most important part of growing food, the soil.

If you are not using your beds to overwinter veg you'll need to make sure you protect them from winter rain and add some much needed nutrients you can do this by sowing green manure, mulching it, covering it with compost or well-rotted manure, covering with cardboard or even covering with plastic.

I'll be doing a mixture of the above depending on what the space has been used for / when I want to use it next year. I recommend keeping an eye on my tik tok where I'll be sharing more details on this over the coming weeks.

Make a pine cone bird feeder

This is great activity to do with children to take care of the birds in your garden. You can watch a how to here:
