March update

As we leap into spring things are starting to ramp up in the garden and at Young Growers Club HQ.

Now is a great time to start thinking about your vegetable growing with the family.

Although it's still a bit cold outside to sow anything directly here's a few things you can to sow inside to plant out later:

  • Peas

  • Lettuce

  • Tomatoes

  • Peppers

If you're interested in growing your own food and want a little helping hand, my Spring Grow Kit is now available to purchase from my website. It has everything you need to start growing peas, carrots, lettuce, cucamelons and coriander.

Now is also a great time to start thinking about what flowers you might want to grow with your children. One of favourite activities to do this month is to take the children to a garden centre and let them pick one packet of seeds. My son has chosen sunflowers and my daughter zinnias, both of which we'll think about sowing at the end of the month.

This week is Composting Week UK so it's a great time to think about adding a composter to your garden.

Composting is great because it:

  • Reduces waste sent to landfill

  • Add nutrients to the soil so makes happy plants

  • Saves you money by giving you free plant food

I have created a free composting PDF which is ideal to use if you're curious about composting or want a resource to give out to students or families. You can download it here.

I'll be ending Composting Week by running a workshop for families on Sunday 18th March. We'll be learning about composting, building a pallet composter and prepping a no dig bed. This event is now SOLD OUT but i'll be sure to share lots more composting information and tips this week.

On the 24th March I'll be running a food growing event for Pride in Luton where we'll be focusing on growing food inside (on a windowsill) and how we can recycle things we have to use as planters.

You can grow so much inside including…

Tomatoes, chillies, lettuce, spinach and herbs. There's also so many different items you can use as planters including tin cans, fruit punnets and yoghurt pots.

As a follow-on from the workshop I'm going to be sharing some helpful windowsill gardening tips so be sure to follow me on Instagram and TikTok at @younggrowersclub.
